Hiccup during unfurling of tricolour causes embarrassment

Sunday, August 15, 2010 05:48:20 PM, PTI

Puducherry: A hiccup during the unfurling of the national flag by Puducherry Chief Minister V Vaithilingam caused embarrassment to officials at the Independence Day celebration here today.

The flag could not be unfurled despite repeated attempts by Vaithilingam as it was tied too strongly, prompting a police officer to rush to his help.

The string was loosened after the flag was brought down.

The tricolour was then unfurled and hoisted as everyone heaved a sigh of relief, but the national anthem was almost over by the time it was done.

Among those present at the celebrations included Union Minister of State V Narayanasamy, Puducherry Assembly Speaker R Radhakrishnan, ministers, legislators, party leaders, officials and a large number of invitees.
