No intelligence failure, Pune blast an ‘insidious’ one : Chidambaram

Pune: The Maharashtra Police's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Saturday filed a charge sheet against seven people, including the sole arrested Mirza Himayat Baig, for Pune's German Bakery bomb blast, Baig's lawyer said.

"The charge sheet has been filed in a Pune court today (Saturday). However, I will receive a copy of the charge sheet only on Monday," said A. Rahman, Baig's lawyer.

"I will be able to plan the defence after I read the copy of the charge sheet. I cannot say much unless I read it," he added.

The charge sheet is likely to contain details of the financial transactions Baig made along with six others, including Mohammed Zarar alias Yaseen Bhatkal, who hails from Karnataka, and Mohsin Chowdhary, a resident of Pune.

Baig, arrested Sep 7 by a team of Mumbai ATS, is expected to be charged with murder and waging war against the country.

The ATS had seized close to two kg of RDX, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) literature, bomb making manuals, the US and Indian currencies, mobile phones and pen drives from him.

Baig, 29, is originally from Beed town of Maharashtra, and was instrumental in creating a module of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Aurangabad and later merging it with the Indian Mujahadeen module.

The Feb 13 blast, in which 17 people were killed and more than 65 injured, ripped through the German Bakery, frequented by foreign nationals and the rich in Pune's trendy Koregaon Park area.

Amongst the victims were four foreigners - an Italian woman, an Iranian and two Sudanese.
