Kolkata: In keeping with the pledge Marxist icon Jyoti Basu had made six years ago, his body was handed over to the authorities of a city hospital today for the benefit of anatomy students.

After Armymen sounded last post and gave the leader the 21-gun salute, a huge crowd that gathered at the venue, Mohar Kunj, witnessed a rare moment.

It was in accordance with the earlier announcement that CPI(M) state committee Secretary Biman Basu declared that Basu's body was being handed over to S S K M Hospital authorities.

Three representatives of the state-run hospital were present to take charge of the mortal remains of Basu which will be preserved in the anatomy department.

After necessary papers were signed the Army, which took charge of the body handed it over to the hospital authorities.

The CPI(M) patriarch had pledged his body in 2004 in keeping with the practice of some of his party colleagues who predeceased him and joining the list of luminary donors in the country.

Basu had also donated his eyes as doctors of an eye hospital removed his corneas on January 17, the day he died at a city hospital.

According to SSKM Medical College Principal Pradip Moitra, Basu's body would be embalmed and kept for dissection by medical students.

He said Basu's skeleton would be separately preserved while a proposal to preserve his brain was also being considered.
