New Delhi: The Delhi government Monday approved a proposal for simplifying the procedure for issuing caste certificates to people in the capital.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters that the decision was taken after various organisations highlighted the difficulties faced by the common man in approaching gazetted officers to get their documents attested.

While the application form, including all supporting documents for Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificate can be attested by any MP, legislator or a gazetted officer, the application forms for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) certificates can be attested after the supporting documents have been attested by a gazetted officer.

Currently, only sub-divisional magistrates (SDM) and tehsildars can issue the certificates.

However, local inquiry will be made in those cases where a family is applying for a caste certificate for the first time or the issuing authority has a reason to believe that an inquiry is essential.

Dikshit added that wrong attestation will be punished, irrespective of the person verifying the documents.
