New Delhi:
India Tuesday said it supports the re-election of United Nations
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a second term.
The Asian Group at the UN met in New York Monday and endorsed by
acclamation the candidature of Ban for a second term, external
affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said here. Ban
assumed office Jan 1, 2007 for a five-year term.
India's support was conveyed by its Acting Permanent
Representative Manjeev Singh Puri.
"The chair of the Asian Group is writing to the president of the
General Assembly and the president of the Security Council,
informing them of the decision of the group," Prakash said.
Last week, Ban named India diplomat Atul Khare to spearhead
efforts to implement a reform agenda aimed at improving the
efficiency of the 192-nation global body.
