50 injured in Bangladesh clash

Dhaka: At least 50 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash Sunday between activists of the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Sirajganj town, police said.

The clash erupted at around 10.30 a.m. in front of a movie theatre and lasted for about three hours, Sub-Inspector Rayhan Uddin - who was injured in the incident - told bdnews24.com.

Clashes took place in many areas of the town. Police, however, brought the situation under control at around 1.30 p.m by firing rubber bullets and teargas shells.

Police said activists of the Awami League's student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), took out a procession protesting a 36-hour shutdown called by the the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami combine.

BCL activists started hurling bricks at a Jamaat-e-Islami office. They then moved to a BNP office and again started throwing bricks at BNP activists, triggering the clash, they said.

The shutdown was called from 6 a.m. Sunday against the government's failure to check price hike, share market crash and deteriorating law and order situation, BNP activists said.
