New Delhi/Malegaon: A total of 31 Muslims are among the 920 candidates who have cleared the UPSC exams held in November 2010. Based on their ranks they would now be recommended for various civil services posts.

Among the 31 Muslims, Tariq Thomas has secured the rank of 35, Mannan Akhtar has secured the rank of 55 whereas Mir Mohammed Ali has secured the rank of 59. Rest all are of the ranks above 100.

Based on the result declared by the Union Public Service Commission May 11, the number of successful Muslim candidates is 31 - a meager 3.36% of the total successful candidates.

Last year, among 875 selected candidates 21 were Muslims and in 2009, out of 791 selected candidates, 31 were Muslims. Dr. Shah Faesal of Kashmir had topped last year's UPSC exams.

This year, Divyadharshini, who is an assistant in State Bank of India in Chennai and has passed in her second attempt with Public Administration and Law as optional papers, has topped the Civil Service examinations.

"I want to do good to the civil society and fight corruption," says S Divyadharshini, a law graduate said after the results.

"I am very happy. I owe my success to my parents and Prabhakaran of Prabhakaran IAS Academy. My parents gave me a lot of freedom and moral support," a delighted Divyadharshini told PTI at her residence in Sterling Road.

Asked whether the new Civil Services Aptitude Test syllabus will affect students from rural areas, she said it will be a level ground to all.

After having completed her law degree from Dr Ambedkar Law University in 2009, she took to UPSC preparations.

Divyadharshini is the second of three siblings.
