Kolkata: With the
change of guard at the helm of the state, many heads of important
cultural and educational institutions in West Bengal put in their
papers as the government that had nominated them was no more in
power.
Nrinendra Nath Chakrabarty, chairman of Paschimbanga Bangla
Akademy said: "Yes I have resigned. I was nominated by the
government, which now does not exist. So it was my moral
responsibility to give up the post."
The Akademi popularly known as Bangla Akademi is the official
regulatory body of the Bengali language in West Bengal.
Asked if he will take up the post if offered by the new
government, the celebrated poet replied: "That's a hypothetical
question and I do not want to answer such a question."
Pabitra Sarkar, vice chairman of the Bangla Akademi, has also
resigned on the same ground. Sarkar could not be reached as he was
out of country, his wife Moitri Sarkar told IANS: "Yes he has
resigned. The government which had appointed him is not in power
so morally he felt it was no correct to continue."
Sanat Chattopadhyay, secretary of the Akademi since its inception
in 1986, has also put in his papers.
State Women Commission Chairperson Malini Bhattacharya, who also
has decided to give up her post, told IANS: "I haven't resigned
yet though it is in the news. We have decided to resign and when
we do that we will issue a public statement in that regard."
Bhattacharya refused to give the reason for the decision to resign
saying: "We will issue a public statement."
