20,000 fined for smoking in public

New Delhi: A total of
20,405 people and 3,200 vendors were fined for smoking in public
places and selling tobacco in restricted areas in the capital from
April 2010 to March 2011.
They were fined Rs.1.8 million by the government, Delhi Health
Minister A.K. Walia said Tuesday.
Speaking on the World Tobacco Day, Walia said: "The Delhi
government is committed to the cause of protecting people from
tobacco that continues to be the second major cause of death,
disease and disability."
The minister stated that Delhi was the first state to enact the
Delhi Prohibition of Smoking and Non Smoker's Health Protection
Act 1996 and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.
