One killed in French nuclear plant blast

Monday September 12, 2011 07:33:38 PM, IANS

London: One person was killed and three others were injured Monday in an explosion at a French nuclear plant, BBC reported.

The explosion took place in the Marcoule plant after a fire in a storage site for radioactive waste, according to the Le Figaro newspaper.

The plant produces MOX fuel, which is used to recycle plutonium from nuclear weapons. It, however, does not include any nuclear reactors.

A spokesman for the atomic energy commission said there has so far been no leak but a security perimeter has been set up because of the risk.

The plant is located in Gard area in Languedoc-Roussillon region, near the Mediterranean coast.
