Aligarh:
Dr. G. G. Hammad Ahmad Shadab, Asst. Professor, Section of
Genetics, Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)
has been selected for the prestigious best poster award sponsored
by Doerenkamp-Zbinden Foundation, Switzerland, in the “8th World
Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences” held
at Fairmont, Montreal, Canada. The prize carries a cash of CAN
$1000.
The World Congress was hosted by the
Canadian Council of Animal Care. Besides attending conference, Dr.
Shadab also visited few molecular Biology Laboratories in Montreal
University and discussed some collaborative research strategies
with the scientists.
The World Congresses on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life
Sciences are the longest running series of international
scientific conferences dedicated to the 3Rs principle of
replacement, reduction and refinement (3Rs) of animal use in
research and safety testing. Since 1993, these conferences have
been held every 2-3 years, and have attracted a large
international group of stakeholders and leading experts interested
in scientific approaches to the development and use of methods
that replace, reduce, and/or refine animal-based laboratory
methods. The next world congress will be held in Prague, Czech
Republic in 2014.
Other awardees of the cash prize included Prof. Mohammad A.
Akbarsha, Director and Chair, Mahatma Gandhi-Doerenkamp Center,
Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, India, and Dr. Krishan
K. Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Zoology and Dean of
Sciences, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer.
About 900 scientists from all over the world participated in the
world congress and 607 abstracts were submitted from 43 countries.
All the abstracts have been published by an international journal
ALTEX having impact factor 4.4.
Dr. Shadab’s Poster was on the “Outcomes of Efforts of Mahatma
Gandhi-Doerenkamp Centre (MGDC), India to replace Animal
Dissection in Life Science and Biomedical Science Education”. The
other co-authors who significantly contributed to this poster
include Md. Zeeshan, Faisal Kunnathodi and Mohammad A. Akbarsha of
MGDC, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli 620 024, India.
