New Delhi: The Jamia
Millia Islamia has launched two new programmes on China and
Afghanistan to promote a better understanding of India's two
important neighbours, a varsity statement said Thursday.
The varsity would be establishing centres for China and
Afghanistan studies in its campus soon as both have been
sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
"China and Afghanistan are two important neighbouring countries of
India. The centres would promote an Indian understanding of these
two countries in a historical framework as well as from a
contemporary perspective," said the statement.
"The centres will encourage interdisciplinary research focussing
on the history, sociology, politics, economics and languages of
these two countries," it added.
According to Jamia, the centres will develop a pool of scholars
and experts on the two countries besides networking with similar
institutions engaged in the study of these two countries.
"The activities of the centres would be designed to stimulate
debate in public spheres for public policy making."
With the establishment of the new centres, Jamia is aiming to
strengthen its existing area studies programmes on Africa, West
Asia, Central Asia, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
