New Delhi: Slamming the government over the arrest of the Muslim youth in the name of fighting terror, activists belonging to over two dozen organizations on Thursday protested outside the residence of Home Minisiter P Chidambaram. They were detained within 15 minutes of gathering outside the official residence of the home minister at Safdarjang Road.

"We are protesting against the norm of treating young Muslims as militants and picking up Muslim children from their homes for being militants," news agency ANI quoted activist Shabnam Hashmi as saying.

She added that the sit-in protest was organised to convey the anguish of the Muslim community who had lost faith in the Congress led government.

"We are here to convey the anguish and the insecurity of the entire Muslim community. We have lost all hope from the Centrall government and the Home Minister. We have not placed any demand in our memorandum as we have lost faith in the government," Hashmi said.

News portal TCN reported that the Union Home Ministry didn’t allow the protest demonstration and the police detained scores of civil rights activists and eminent citizens within 15 minutes as they gathered outside the official residence of Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

To thwart the protest demonstration, the Delhi Police had since morning blocked several roads leading to the residence of the Home Minister. Scores of activists including Shabnam Hashmi, Mahtab Alam, Tanweer Alam and Amanatullah Khan gathered at Jorbagh Metro Station and marched towards Chidambaram’s residence, TCN added.

"We sat on the dharna in front of the home minister’s official residence but within 15 minutes police detained us, put into vans and took to Chanakyapuri Police Station. Soon a group of other civil rights activists gathered there but they too were detained. In all 51 people were detained", said Shabnam Hashmi.

The organizations participated in the protest were: AISA, Aman Biradari, ANHAD, Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, Centre for Policy Analysis, Champa - The Amiya & B.G. Rao Foundation , Citizens for Democracy, Jamia Teacher's Solidarity Association, JNUSU, Movement for Empowerment of Muslim Indians (MOEMIN), National Campaign against Fabrication of Cases ( www.fabricated.in), NCDHR ( National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights), PUCL (Delhi unit), Revolutionary Youth Association, Syed Kazmi Solidarity Committee.
