Mamata thanks people for moral support on

"Deeply touched" by the overwhelming response to her Facebook post
on Singur, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday
said, on the social networking site, that the moral support was
fuelling the struggle for the cause of the farmers.
"Thank you very much for your overwhelming response to my post on
Singur yesterday. This has deeply touched my heart. Your moral
support at this juncture is a great source of inspiration to
continue our struggle for the cause of farmers," wrote Banerjee in
response to her Friday's post which received 1,133 comments and
nearly 1,800 likes.
Describing the Singur land movement as a "turning point in recent
history", Banerjee said the movement initiated a serious debate in
the country on the issue of land acquisition from small, poor and
marginal farmers bringing to fore the "sensitivity to land,
primarily in the agrarian economy".
The Calcutta High Court Friday struck down the Singur Land
Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, which scrapped the land
lease given to Tata Motors by the Left Front regime.
Terming as "unconstitutional" the law enacted by the Banerjee
government last year to return the land acquired from the farmers,
a division bench ruled that sections of compensation in the
legislation were in conflict with the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.
The verdict has caused gloom among most of the affected farmers in
Singur in Hooghly district, 40 km from Kolkata.
Automobile giant Tata Motors had moved a division bench against
Justice I.P. Mukerji's Sep 28 ruling that upheld the law passed by
the Banerjee government soon after assuming office last year. The
government sought to return 400 acres of acquired Singur land to
farmers from whom it was taken reportedly against their will by
the then Left Front regime.
A total of 997 acres of land in Singur was leased to the Tatas by
the Left Front government for the firm's Nano small car project,
along with several vendors who were to set up ancillary units at
the site.
Appreciating those who had expressed support for farmers' land
rights and the people's democratic movement on this issue and
thanking those who held different views, Banerjee urged the people
to continue to share their thoughts through the forum.
Describing herself as "one who struggled for the cause of working
people", Banerjee reiterated her government's commitment to the
farmers and assured them that she would fight for their cause.
