Yavatmal
(Maharashtra): Three tribal women were killed and two
men injured in a forest fire in the Tipeshwar Sanctuary in eastern
Maharashtra, an official said here Thursday.
The victims had gone deep in the forest to collect bamboo,
firewood and other products when they were caught in the flames
that engulfed them, said Pandharkavda Police Station in-charge
Aniruddha Adhav. Yavatmal is around 860 km east of Mumbai.
The forest fire has been burning since the past four days.
The incident took place Wednesday evening, but the authorities
came to know about it early Thursday after the two injured men
reached the nearest human habitation.
The Tipeshwar Sanctuary has been in the news recently after three
tigers were killed and one became a man-eater, creating havoc in
the area.
The victims have been identified as: Chandrakala Seedam (35),
Subhadra Meshram (34) and Sheela M. Tendur (19), whose funeral
will be held in Pandharkavda later Thursday.
The two injured - Shamrao Seedam and Ravindra Dandate - alerted
officials about the tragedy in the jungle after traversing seven
hours through eight kms of thick forest to reach a village.
Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti chief Kishor Tiwari demanded that
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan must visit and see for himself
how the jungles have been wiped out in the region.
“The illegal tendu, bamboo and moha plucking is responsible for
the deaths of these innocent tribals,” Tiwari said.
