Close aid of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Tarique
Anwar, and the kin of late Congress leader from West Bengal Ghani
Khan Choudhury, Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury, have been sworn in on
Sunday as ministers of state.
While AH Khan Choudhury has been
sworn in as Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Tarque
Anwar has been given the charge as Minister of State for
Agriculture - a portfolio administered by his party leader Sharad
Pawar.
Congress MP from Malda South in West
Bengal AH Khan Choudhury was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2006 in a
bye-election caused by the death of his elder brother Ghani Khan
Choudhury and re-elected from the same seat in the 2009.
He was earlier member of the
Consultative Committee of Ministry of Urban Development, and of
the Standing Committee, Ministry of HRD.
He was a student of the Northampton College of Technology
(England) in its footwear manufacturing division.Subsequently, he
obtained an Advanced Certificate from City and Guilds of London
Institute in footwear technology.
Later in Canada, he obtained a certificate in Industrial
Engineering from a technical college. Thereafter, he obtained a
degree in industrial psychology from the University of Guelph,
Ontario, Canada.
Tarique Anwar who has sworn in as
MoS for Agriculture is General secretary of the Nationalist
Congress Party of India and a Member of the Parliament
representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha.
He has been Member of Lok Sabha
several times from Katihar Parliamentary Constituency.
His political career started from
Congress Party, as a student leader he was very popular. He
contested his first Lok Sabha election from Katihar Parliamentary
constituency on a Congress ticket in 1977 which he lost. But he
managed to win the 1980 Lok Sabha Election from Katihar, and from
then onwards there was no stopping for him.
He has also been the National
President of Indian Youth Congress.
K. Rahman Khan, former Rajya Sabha
Dy Chairman, is another Muslim face who has been inducted in the
cabinet Sunday. He has been sworn in as Minister of Minority
Affairs.
With the induction of K Rahman Khan
as cabinet minister, and Tarique Anwar
and AH Khan Choudhury as MoS, total number of Muslims in Manmohan
Singh cabinet has increased to six.
Other Muslims in the cabinet are
Salman Khurshid, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Farooque Abdullah.
