Suspended cop takes senior 'hostage' in Hyderabad

Wednesday September 12, 2012 10:48:06 PM, IANS

Hyderabad: A suspended head constable took a senior police official 'hostage' here Wednesday, sending shock waves across the police establishment.

Giriprasad Sharma, a suspended head constable with the Police Transport Organisation, took Superintendent of Police Lakshminarayana hostage, in a shop near Birla Planetarium in the heart of the city.

Sharma locked the shutters from inside and threatened to kill the official and commit suicide if police tried to break in.

He sent messages to some television channels and to a sub-inspector that he was carrying 40 litres of petrol with him.

The suspended head constable was demanding action against additional superintendent of police Vijaykumar, alleging that he was harassing him.

Senior police officials rushed to the area, not far from the state police headquarters, and launched efforts to rescue the hostage.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy appealed to the head constable to release the official and promised to take action against the additional superintendent of police.
