Delhi's Garden of Five Senses celebrates I-Day in unique style
Friday August 16, 2013 0:13 AM, IANS

The usually deserted Garden of Five Senses in south Delhi was on Thursday humming with activity, with stalls selling food items, trinkets, books and small tricolour flags to mark Independence Day.

Though there was no official flag-hoisting ceremony, the patriotic fervour was visible in the events held in the park, hosted by Delhi Tourism.

There were numerous stalls selling food items of different states, tricolour flags, tricolour bangles, books and even unani medicines.

Vinod K. Kakkar, chief manager of the park, told IANS: "The stalls here are family-friendly and will help them enjoy the occasion in a tranquil environment."

He said though the weather could play spoilsport, he was expecting a footfall of around 4,000 at the park for the day-long event.

To mark the occasion, a cultural programme in association with Sahitya Kala Parishad was being held, said Kakkar.

Bhai Miyan, a traditional kite-maker, attracted a horde of visitors as he let soar into the sky a trail of tricolour kites.

A stall by Jamia Hamdard selling unani medicines attracted the largest number of visitors with many people enquiring about the various medicines on display and their efficacy.

"Unani medicines are genuine. But since patients are more obsessed with allopathic medicines, unani has lost its relevance," Mohd Fasihi Zamman, associate professor of unani medicine at the Jamia Hamdard, told IANS.

Kakkar promised that they would hold an even better event next Independence Day.
