Animal sacrifice: Prohibitory orders clamped in Odisha village

Monday January 14, 2013 11:03:38 PM, IANS

Bhubaneswar: Police Monday clamped prohibitory orders in a village in Odisha's Bolangir district to foil a plan by villagers to sacrifice hundreds of animals as part of their annual religious ceremony Tuesday, officials said.

The order under section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prohibits assembly of more than four people in an area, has been clamped in Khairguda village where attempts are being made to sacrifice large number of animals, a senior district police official told IANS.

People sacrifice thousands of animals including roosters, goats and buffaloes every year in the district as part of their age-old Sulia Yatra or the annual killing festival.

However no animal sacrifice took place at Khairguda, the main killing ground, about 300 km from here, in the past few years because of the strong opposition by animal rights activists and local administrations.

Police have beefed up security after the organisers of the festival announced to resume the practice this year at the same site, the official said.
