Lucknow: Bowing to the strong demand by the people in the state, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday accepted the Nimesh Commission report which probed the arrest of two Muslim youths - Khalid Mujahid and Tariq Qasmi, in 2007 on terror charges.
"The report was accepted by the Cabinet meeting today," Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav told newspersons after the meeting.
The report was already leaked and published online about two months ago.
The earstwhile Mayawati government had after much pressure appointed the Nimesh Commission to look into allegations that Khalid Mujahi and Tariq Qasmi were wrongly arrested in the 2007 terror attack. The commission had submitted its report in August 2012.
According to the leaked report, the commission had raised serious questions over the arrest of the two youths.
The Samajwadi Party had in its manifesto promised to release the Muslim youths wrongly arrested in terror cases.
Based on the findings of the Nimesh Commission, the government had already initiated a procedure to withdraw cases against Tariq Qasmi and Khalid Mujhaid. Khalid Mujahid however died in mysterious circumstances last month.
After Khalid Mujahid's death, pressure built up on the state government to release and act on the Nimesh Commission.
The government will now present the report in the coming UP legislative session along with the action taken report, the Chief minister, who presided over the Cabinet meeting, said.
