New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said he would be happy to see Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi become the prime minister.
"I will be very happy to see Rahul Gandhi step into my shoes," Singh said when asked about Rahul Gandhi's candidature for prime ministership.
Talking to reporters after the oath-taking ceremony of eight new ministers in his ministerial council at Rashtrapati Bhavan here, Singh said he had always believed that Rahul Gandhi had the qualities to lead the United Progressive Alliance.
The Prime Minister's remark is significant as he had on earlier two occasions virtually not ruled out himself being in the race for the top post again if the UPA wins a hat trick.
"Rahul Gandhi is a natural leader of the Congress. I hope he will lead the UPA. I always believe Rahul is fit enough and has the right qualities of a leader," Singh told journalists.
The Prime Minister brushed aside a query on whether Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi posed a challenge with a twitch to the eyebrow.
"Modi is no threat. People of India know what he stands for... People of India have to draw their own conclusion what they stand for," Singh said.
