Malegaon: Exposing yet another instance of rampant malpractice in Indian Wakf, the Anti Corruption Bureau on Saturday caught Maharashtra Wakf Board Chief Executive Offficer (CEO) N.D. Pathan red-handed while taking bribe in cash at his residence in Naded. He was later arrested and a case was filed against him.
The shocking incident occurred barely few days after Union Minister for Minority Affairs K Rahman Khan while addressing the CEOs from the different states mulled an efficient system for effective managment of the Indian Wakf.
Pathan was caught red-handed after a complaint against him was filed by one Shaikh Kareem, a resident of Nanded city. Kareem had taken an agricultural land on lease for the board. Kareem wanted the lease which had expired this year to be renewed and had subsequently approached Pathan to see if the lease could be extended.
N D Pathan had been posted as the CEO of the Waqf Board in 2011 and had been operating from the the head office in Aurangabad.
Pathan had allegedly asked for a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakhs from Shaikh Kareem to ensure that the land stayed in his possession. Police officers in Nanded said that an installment of Rs 50,000 had been paid by Shaikh who subsequently approached the Anti Corruption Bureau.
Shaikh was supposed to hand over the next installment of Rs 30,000 to Pathan when the ACB decided to trap him at Pathan's residence at Nanded.
ACB officers trapped him accepting the bribe and had registered a case in Nanded.
Officials meanwhile also did a thorough check of Pathan's residence to check his assets. Till the time of going to press the officials armed with a note counting machine were still inside Pathan's house.
