New Delhi: Uneasy calm prevailed in East Delhi's Trilokpuri and the neighboring areas and no incident of fresh violence reported from any part of the riot-affected areas Monday. However, a demand for probe into the role of former BJP MLA Sunil Kumar Vaidya intensified with the Aaam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleging that the riots were pre-planned.
In a press statement, AAP alleged that Vaidya had called a meeting on Diwali after which the violence erupted in the area.
"His (Vaidya's) role in the incident should be probed. There is a need to investigate the purpose of inflammatory meetings on Diwali night and where did the group led by this BJP leader go after their controversial meeting," the AAP release said.
Congress too attacked the 'Hindutva forces' for flaring communal tension. Speaking to TOI, Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh said, "The VHP and RSS are showing their true colours. With change of guard at the Centre, such forces have got a boost. This is a serious cause of concern as there have been no communal riots in Delhi since 1984. As for AAP, they are just doing politics."
The communal clashes began in Trilokpuri area on Friday (Oct. 24) evening and were on till 24 hours later, leaving at least 13 people injured, including eight with bullet injuries.
Though prohibitory orders were imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC on Saturday night, security forces struggled to gain control, with clashes spreading to at least five blocks in the area. At least three of those injured are critical.
According to a police officer, a Mata ki chowkior jagran (special worship offered during Navratri) was organised in front of a mosque at the Block 15-20- 27 junction of Trilokpuri on Diwali night which was objected to by local Muslims. Heated arguments between them resulted in stone pelting and burning of a shop.
Soon, the police intervened and controlled the situation, he said.
"Tension mounted once again on Friday night after former BJP MLA Sunil Kumar Vaidya reached the spot with his supporters and announced to build a temple there. I have not personally heard it from him but have got several complaints.
"This aggravated the tension in the area with members of both communities started pelting stones on each other and opening gun fire. Fifteen people, including 13 policemen and two locals, have been injured," the officer, who did not want to be named, reportedly told Firstpost.
Vaidya, however, said the allegations are baseless.
"People came to me to complain with complaints against a group of Muslim criminals who were disrupting mata ki chowki function. I had called the SHO and ACP to my office to listen to their complaints. I didn't hold any meeting on Diwali night", he said.
The Delhi BJP leadership also rubbished allegations and said the party was "unnecessarily politicizing riots".
"We are trying to defuse communal tension, but AAP is unnecessarily politicizing it. Kejriwal has no issue left to talk about so he is leveling baseless allegations,'' said Satish Upadhyay, Delhi BJP president.
