Kozhikode: Quoting Karl Marx’s 'Religion is the sigh of Masses', T.N. Joy, a renowned social and political activist, Tuesday announced his conversion to Islam.
Joy also said he has decided to embrace Islam to protest increasing hate crimes against Indian Muslims.
“I believe in the slogan that ‘Personal is Political. My conversion to Islam is my way of protesting against increasing religious fascism against Muslims. I am changing my name from Joy to Najmal,” he said while addressing a packed press conference.
“At the time of religious fascism, I am resigning from the religion into which I was born. I dream of a society where such religious conversions are not news,” he added.
Joy had earlier announced his decision through a Facebook post on Monday. “The process is not over. I welcome your comments,” the post said.
Confirming the news, Joy said. “As part of his struggle against the casteism, my father gave me the name Joy and I am taking it further. I have taken the name Najmal N Babu,” .
“Fascist tail has grown to all Hindus after the demolition of Babri Masjid. Muslims in the country are feeling threatened,” he said.
Joy also said he has not decided to join any Muslim organization.
