Riyadh: King Salman bin Abdulaziz, who is known for his contributions made to memorization of the Holy Quran, intonation and recitation, memorized the entire Quran while he was only 12.
King Salman was proclaimed the seventh King of Saudi Arabia on January 23, 2015 upon the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.
According to local press, King Salman, born in Riyadh on 5/10/1354 H corresponding to December 31, 1935, received his early education at Princes' School and celebrated the completion of memorizing the whole Quran on Sunday, 12/8/1364 H.
Memorisers of the Holy Quran are seen with highest honour and regard in a Muslim society.
After completing Quran memorisation, King Salman studied religion and modern science at the same institution that was established by his father King Abdulaziz in 1356 to provide education for his children.
As president of the 'Prince Salman Prize for Quran Memorization' for boys and girls in Saudi Arabia, he encouraged fellow citizens to learn and memorize the Holy Quran.
A staunch believer in the Holy Quran, King Salman in one of his speeches observed, "The Holy Quran is one of the great bounties bestowed by Allah Almighty on the Muslims, and when we adhere to the teachings of the Holy Quran we will remain honored and strong, and if we fail to do so then we will be humiliated and divided."
Immediately after ascending to the throne of the Kingdom, he surprised the Saudis when he made circumambulation around the Ka'bah without security, allowing those present to meet him without restriction.
When US president visited Riyadh to offer his condolence after the death of King Abdullah, he made sure that the meeting with world's most powerful man did not stop him from offering prayers. While he was sitting with Obama and heard the call for Asr prayers, he left Obama alone to offer the prayers.
King Salman also has great interest in cultural and humanitarian work and since 1376 AH, corresponding to 1956, he has chaired a number of associations, organizations, and main committees of charitable work inside the kingdom and abroad, and sponsored and supported many cultural projects.
King Salman is a strong advocate of philanthropy in poor Muslim nations such as Somalia, Sudan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
He is regarded as intelligent and hardworking and a trusted mediator in settling conflicts. His administration of Riyadh Province was corruption-free.
He established strong relations with tribal leaders, Islamic scholars, intellectuals and the media.
For his humanitarian services, he has been awarded many medals and decorations, including awards from Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Morocco, Palestine, the Philippines, Senegal, the United Nations, Yemen, and the King Abdulaziz Medal – First Class.
