A protest march, led by Republican Party of India (RPI) leader and MLA Jogendra Kawade and MLA Haribhau Rathod, was held here on Thursday against the alleged rape of a minor girl last week in the city.

The march - 'Akrosh Morcha' saw participation of members of the Banjara community, people belonging to ST/SC categories, and RPI workers, PTI reported.

The protesters demanded stern action against the accused who allegedly raped the girl. They also demanded amendments in the SC and the ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, a police official said.

The march which began from Nandur Naka locality concluded at the Revenue commissioner office, police said, adding no untoward incident was reported.

Later, a delegation led by Rathod submitted a memorandum to the Nashik Divisional Commissioner in this regard.

The accused, identified as Sachin Hiraman Patil (34), a resident of Nandur Naka on Nashik-Aurangabad road, was for the crime that took place on September 15, they said.

The protest by RPI workers and Banjara community is staged at a time when Marathas are staging protest march all across the state demanding amendments in the SC and the ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and action against the accused of lower caste involved in rape and murder of a girl at Kopardi in Ahmednagar district two months ago.
