Lucknow: Two days after the release of the first list of party candidates, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi will formally kick-start the party's poll campaign for Uttar Pradesh assembly polls with a rally in Kairana on Friday.
Kairana in Shamli district was in news last year due to the alleged “exodus” of residents following deteriorating law and order situation.
Shadab Chauhan, an office bearer of the local MIM unit, said the party has already taken the necessary permission for the rally. Owaisi had earlier denied permission to hold the rally in the area.
The MIM Uttar Pradesh Chief Shoukat Ali had two days ago released a list of 11 candidates for the first and second phases of the polls. The list included Masiullah, who is the party candidate from Kairana.
The AIMIM released the list of party candidates after its talks with Dr Ayyub to forge an alliance with his Peace Party failed.
The AIMIM has fielded four candidates in the first phase in which polling will take place on 73 seats on March 11. They are Mohammad Idris from Agra (South), Ahtasham Ali from Firozabad City, Masiullah from Kairana and Parvez Ahmed from Koil in Aligarh district.
The MIM has also announced the names of seven contestants for the second phase on March 15 when elections would be held for 67 assembly seats.
The party has fielded two candidates in Saharanpur: Junaid Ayubi from Behat assembly seat and Talat Khan in Saharanpur.
Haji Shahabuddin, Haji Aslam Ansari and Israr Hussain will contest from Moradabad City, Moradabad Dehat (rural) and Kundarki seat in Saharanpur district. Yaseen Ansari from Bareilly City, and Shamim Ahmed Turk in Amroha city will be official nominee of AIMIM.
The party has fielded candidates in assembly constituencies which have a sizeable Muslim population.
This is not the first time the AIMIM will be contesting Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. It had fielded a Dalit youth leader, Pradeep Kori, in the Bikapur Assembly by-poll last year. Kori stood fourth with 11,857 votes, marginally less than the BJP candidate’s 11,933 votes, while the winner was Samajwadi Party’s Anand Sen who got 68,896 votes.
Before that the AIMIM had won four gram panchayat seats in the Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls held last year.
