New Delhi: A Nigerian national begged and screamed for help as he was tied to a post and thrashed by a mob in Delhi but nobody came to help the poor victim. The incident occured some 15 days ago but it came to light Monday after the video of the incident went viral on social media sites.

The video shows a group of people tying the Nigerian national, whom they accused of theft, to a pole and beating him mercilessly with sticks as he screamed and sought mercy.

The video also shows one of the attackers hooking the legs of the Nigerian while another hit the soles with a stick. while the men surrounding the victim hurled abuses at him and others filmed the act using their smartphones.

The man was allegedly caught trying to rob a house in Malviya Nagar in south Delhi, which has a sizeable population of African students. After the shameful assault, the Nigerian was arrested and jailed but his attackers are still roaming free.

People in the neighbourhood allegedly told the police that he was hurt when he fell down the stairs while trying to escape.

African nationals have been attacked in New Delhi and the adjoining areas in the past as well.

In April 2017 Four Nigerian students were attacked by a group of Greater Noida residents after a 17-year-old boy Manish died due to suspected drug overdose last month. The attack took place as locals alleged that the boy died after the Nigerians forced him to inhale drugs.
