Bengaluru: Senior journalist and a staunch critic of Hindutva politics Gauri Lankesh was on Tuesday shot dead by unidentified assailants at her residence in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
Police said her body was found on the porch of her home in West Bengaluru. Lankesh had just reached home and was about to enter when unidentified men shot at the 55-year-old journalist and editor of Lankesh Patrika from close range.
While three bullets pierced Gauri's head, neck, and chest, four bullets were sprayed on the walls. She died instantly, police said.
The news was confirmed by city police commissioner.
The police commissioner further said that they will investigate if Lankesh was facing any threats. “”She didn’t complain of anything. If she anywhere expressed about threats, it will be thoroughly investigated,” the Bengaluru Police Commissioner said.
Condemning the “heinous crime”, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he was shocked to learn of the murder of the renowned journalist.
“Absolutely shocked to learn about the murder of renowned journalist Gauri Lankesh. I have no words to condemn this heinous crime,” he tweeted.
Meanwhile, a protest has been called in New Delhi on Wednesday to condemn the brutal murder of Gauri Lankesh.
