Agartala: The assembly elections in Tripura saw a 78.56% voter turnout till 9 pm - much lower than the 91.82% of the 2013 elections.
Voting continued till late in the evening, with Electronic Voting machines developing glitches in some areas.
Polling was held on Sunday for 59 of the total 60 seats in the state where the CPI(M), which is ruling the state since 1993 with Manik Sarkar as Chief Minister, is seeking re-election.
Voting in Charilam Assembly constituency would be held on March 12 due to the death of the CPI(M) candidate for the seat, Ramendra Narayan Deb Barma, five days ago.
The counting of votes however will be done on March 03, 2018.
Voting held at 3,174 polling stations, of which 47 would be managed only by women. There are a total of 292 candidates, including 23 women.
Tripura has about 26 lakh voters, about half of them are women. The number of third gender voters is 11. There are 47,803 new voters this time.
The CPI (M) is contesting in 57 seats and its allies - the RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI, contesting in one seat each.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which has forged an alliance with tribal outfit Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), has fielded 51 candidates. IPFT will contest in the remaining nine seats.
The Congress is contesting the election alone and has fielded candidates in 59 seats. The party has not fielded any candidate for Kakrabon constituency in Gomati district.
CPI(M) campaign was led by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar who addressed more than 50 rallies. Sarkar will becomes Chief Minister for the 5th time if he wins again.
The Congress campaign was somewhat subdued with the party president Rahul Gandhi addressing a rally in Kailashahar of Unakoti district on the last day.
The BJP however is trying hard to dislodge the Left from Tripura where it has been in power since last 25 years. Besides, Prime Minister Modi, weveral senior leaders of the party addressed rallies in Tripura. A day before the polling, BJP leaders expressed confidence that the party will come to power in this North Eastern Indian state.
