Hyderabad: Hours after Salman Nadvi, one of the founder members of the All India Muslim Board (AIMPLB), accused board members of heckling him, local MP Asaduddin Owaisi found in somewhat similar situation on Saturday.

General Secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) Mohammed Wali Rahmani presented the panel’s annual report on Saturday. Among other things, he also praised Congress MPs including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel and Anand Sharma for opposing the triple talaq bill in the parliament.

However, quiet surprising for those present in the meeting Wali Rahmani did not mention the names of other parties like Biju Janata Dal, AIADMK, TDP and the Trinamool Congress. But the most shocking omission in the report was of E T Mohammed Basheer of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Asaduddin Owaisi of All India Majlis-e-Itthadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), according to the sources present in the meeting.

In fact Asaduddin Owaisi was the only MP who delivered the fiery speech in the Lok Sabha to oppose the triple talaq.

Owaisi was later hailed for his speech by admirers and critics both even as AIUDF MP Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi and Congress MP Asrarul Haque Qasmi were slammed for their absence during the debate.

Owaisi’s speech in the Lok Sabha opposing triple talaq found mention in many editorials and artilces in Urdu press. It is also claimed that the totally opposite position which Congress took in the Rajya Sabha was solely the result of the strong position Owaisi had taken in the Lok Sabha which earned him admiration from all around.

It is hence there was a ruckus in the Muslim panel’s meeting on Saturday when the annual report did not find mention of Asaduddin Owaisi and E T Mohammed Basheer.

It is also learnt that Mateen Qadri, a member of the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC), protested terming the report bias.

“It was Asaduddin Owaisi who had objected to the bill in an aggressive manner. How can his name be omitted in the report and his relentless effort against the bill not be appreciated?” he questioned.

Qadri was soon joined by other delegates from Hyderabad to express protest over the fross humiliation of Asasduddin Owaisi – who incidentally is also the plenary's reception committee and personally looking after the arrangements of the 3-day meeting of the Muslim panel held at Salar E Millat Auditorium at Owaisi Hospital & Research Centre in Hyderabad.

To further embarrass the host, board secretary Wali Rahmani thanked Qadri for pointing out the lapses but did not give any assurance to correct this omission.

It is also learnt that the AIMIM had expected that Asaduddin Owaisi, already a member of the board, would be nominated as Secretary of the Muslim panel since this post had fallen vacant after the demise of Abdul Raheem Qureshi, President of Tameer-e-Millat, Hyderabad.

Some of the board’s members also felt that a person from Hyderabad should be given representation at AIMPLB as Secretary. But, the board chose Khalid Saifullah Rahmani as Secretary. Saifullah Rahmani, though resides in Hyderabad, is originally from Bihar.

Interestingly, the embarrassing moment for AIMIM and Asaduddin Owaisi came amid the allegations ny Salman Nadvi, one of founder members of the board, that the Muslim panel has been hijacked by "few members" who are behaving like a dictator.

Though Salman Nadvi did name anybody, but his targets were clear when, while talking to reporters in Hyderabad on Saturday, he said only board's president Syed Rabey Hasani Nadvi and Jamiat Ulema President Arshad Madni are sane among the top leadership of the board.

Salman Nadvi even claimed that the Muslim personal law board has as on today lost its credibility and it should be dissolved and replaced with a more representative “Shariah Application Board”.

The latest episode of rift in the board comes at the backdrop of criticism the Muslim panel is receiving since last few months because of its poor handling of the instant triple talaq case.
