HC bars EC from holding bypolls in Delhi till AAP MLAs case is heard

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday barred the Election Commission from holding bypolls in the national capital till the hearing in the case regarding the disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs is over.

The Delhi High Court issued notices to the Election Commission and the Centre, and adjourned the matter for Monday after stating that any notification for bypolls cannot be issued till the matter is heard properly.

The Delhi High Court was hearing a petition filed by 08 of the 20 AAP MLAs against their disqualification for holding office of profit, which the party has called "vendetta politics" by the BJP.

The Election Commission had in January 19 recommended to the President of India the disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs. President Ram Nath Kovind approved their disqualification on Sunday.

The 20 MLAs who have been disqualified are Adarsh Shastri (Dwarka), Alka Lamba (Chandni Chowk), Anil Bajpai (Gandhi Nagar), Avtar Singh (Kalkaji), Kailash Gahlot (Najafgarh) -- who is also a minister -- Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar), Manoj Kumar (Kondli), Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli), Nitin Tyagi (Laxmi Nagar), Praveen Kumar (Jangpura).

Others are: Rajesh Gupta (Wazirpur), Rajesh Rishi ( Janakpuri), Sanjeev Jha (Burari), Sarita Singh (Rohtas Nagar), Som Dutt (Sadar Bazar), Sharad Kumar (Narela), Shiv Charan Goel (Moti Nagar), Sukhbir Singh (Mundka), Vijendar Garg (Rajinder Nagar) and Jarnail Singh (Tilak Nagar).
