New Delhi: The Congress party on Saturday once again questioned the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and urged the Election Commission of India to revert back to paper ballots.
"To ensure the credibility of the electoral process, the Election Commission should revert to the old practice of using ballot papers as most major democracies have done," the Congress said in its political resolution moved at the party's two-day plenary session.
The Congress during its 84th plenary session while recalling the "apprehensions among political parties and the people" over the misuse of the Electronic Voting Machines, said, "This (reverting to paper ballots) is necessary as there are misgivings on misuse of EVMs to manipulate the outcome contrary to popular verdict."
Doubts over EVMs were raised after every election by the Congress and other parties. In recently held civic elections in Uttar Pradesh, BJP candidates won where elections were held using EVMs, but lost where paper ballots were used. "This shows that EVMs are manipulated", SP leader Akhilesh Yadav and BSP Chief Mayawati had said.
Patidar leader Hardik Patel had also alleged that EVMs used in Gujarat assembly elections were manipulated in favour of the BJP. "BJP was under pressure because of doubts raised over the reliability of EVMs. This is why they allowed Congress candidates to win in some seats", he had alleged.
The Election Commission of India however defended the voting machines, insisting that they were tamper proof. Beginning with the 2017 assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the poll panel started using an additional device that presents a paper receipt to confirm that the vote went to candidate selected by the candidate.
