Bengaluru: The counting of votes in Karnataka is over. After the final round of vote count, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 104 seats - 08 short of the halfway mark 112 needed to form the government in the state.
The Congress has finished with 78 seats, JD(S) won 38 seats whereas others have won 02 seats.
Meanwhile, Congress has offered to support JD(S) government in Karnataka and the latter has accepted the former's offer. Leaders of the two parties are expected to meet the governor today evening and stake the claim to form government.
On the other hand, since the BJP has emerged as the single largest party, it too has asked the governor to invite the party's chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa to form the government.
Karnataka has a total of 224 seats in its assembly. But, polling in the state was held on Saturday May 12, 2018 for 222 seats. Election for one seat was cancelled because of the death of the BJP nominee whereas polling in Rajarajeswari Nagar seat was postponed to May 28 after a cache of voter ID cards was seized.

UT Abdul Khader is contesting from Mangalore assembly seat whereas Tanveer Sait is fighting the election from the Narasimharaja seat. Roshan Baig is also ahead of his rival in Shivajinagar. Likewise, Rahim Khan is leading in Bidar.
According to the latest trends, the BJP is leading in 117 seats, Congress is ahead in just 63 seats whereas JD(S) looks set to win 40 seats. Others are leading in 02 seats.

08:00 am Counting of votes for the 222 of the total 224 Assembly seats in Karnataka has started at all 40 centres in Karnataka. The process began at 08:00 am today morning with counting of postal ballots. After postal ballots, counting will take place of votes registered in Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).
"The counting of votes will begin around 8 am at nearly 40 centres in 30 districts", the Election Commission said. Counting in the state capital Bengaluru, includng BMS College of Engineering, is being held at 03 centres. The trends are likely to begin trickling by 08:30 am today. Final results will be out by late afternoon.
07:30 am Counting of votes to start at 08:00 am. Security has been tightened and prohibitory orders put in place from Monday evening and would be in force till Tuesday midnight. At least 100 security personnel have been deployed at each counting centre and entry has been made limited to those who have authorisation. Candidates have been barred from the celebration of any kind at polling booths.
A total of 2,622 candidates, including 217 women, are contesting the election. Karnataka recorded a polling percentage of 72.13%. The turnout was the highest-ever in Karnataka since the 1952 assembly elections.
The Congress Party has demanded that VVPAT or paper trail should also be counted in all counting centres booths over the fear of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is contesting from Chamundeshwari in Mysuru and Badami in North Karnataka, his son Yatheendra is contesting from Varuna constituency and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy’s daughter Soumya received the Congress ticket from Jayanagar seat.
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Ministerial Candidate BS Yeddyurappa is contesting from the Shikaripura assembly seat.
Former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader HD Kumaraswamy is contesting from two seats Ramanagara and Channapatna.
Important Muslim leaders who are contesting the 2018 Karnataka elections are R Roshan Baig – a minister in the current government, and sitting MLAs Fairoz Nuruddin Saith, U.T. Abdul Khader, Dr. Rafeeq Ahmed S., Tanveer Sait and B.A.Mohiuddin Bava.
Karnataka is currently ruled by Congress which has a total of 118 seats - 05 more than half-way mark needed to form the government. The BJP currently has 42 MLAs and JD(S) has 29 members. 20 seats are vacant and the remaining seats are with Independents and other smaller parties.
2018 Karnataka Elections: Exit Poll Results
Exot Polls have throwm conflicting results. Some Exit Polls have claimed that Congress will emerge as the single largest party whereas others have predicted BJP's victory. None of the Exit Polls however has given enough seats to either Congress or BJP needed to form the government.
India Today-Axis My India Exit Poll has given Congress 106-118 seats, BJP 79-92 seats and JDS 22-30 seats. Likewise, Times Now-VMR survey seat projection for parties are 90-103 seats for Congress, 80-93 seats for BJP, 35 seats for JD(s)+ and 6 seats for others.
ABP News Exit Poll by C-Voter however has given BJP 107 seats, Congress 88 seats, JD(S) 25 seats and others 04 seats. Similarly, News Nation, News X-CNX, Republic TV-Jan Ki Baat and Today's Chanakya have also predicted that the BJP will win more 100 seats.
According to the 2011 Census report, 84% of the population in Karnataka are Hindu, 12.9% are Muslim, 1.9% are Christian, 0.7% are Jains, 0.2% are Buddhist, some 0.1% are Sikhs, and remaining belong to other religions. Karnataka is also the location of some of tribes like, Nayaka, Soliga, and Yerava.
