New Delhi: Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the second senior most judge in the Supreme Court of India, is all set to be the next Chief Justice of India. Justice Gogoi will take oath on October 3 and will serve as Chief Justice till November 17 next year.
Outgoing Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, who is retiring on October 2, has recommended his name to the government for the post keeping with the convention that the senior-most judge is eligible to be the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Gogoi was among the four senior judges who held a press conference in January this year citing that democracy in the country was under threat.
Justice Ranjan Gogoi was born in 1954. He joined the bar association in 1978. He was appointed a judge in Guwahati High Court in 2001. He became the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011.
Justice Gogoi hails from Assam. He headed the special bench which is monitoring the updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) the second and final draft of which was released last month.
