Uddhav Thackeray on CAB

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray Tuesday said that Shiv Sena will not support Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 (CAB) unless the changes demanded by the party are incorporated.

Thackeray, who is also Shiv Sena Chief, also said that it was BJP's illusion that those who disagree on CAB are "deshdrohi" (traitors).

"Anyone who disagrees is a 'deshdrohi' is their illusion. We have suggested changes in Citizenship Amendment Bill we want in Rajya Sabha", he said.

"It is an illusion that only BJP cares for the country", the former ally of the BJP reiterated.

Thackeray also said that if any citizen is "afraid of this Bill", then the government must clear their doubts. "They are our citizens, so one must answer their questions too," said the Maharashtra Chief Minister.

"We will not give support to the Bill (Citizenship Amendment Bill) unless things are clear", he added.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 (CAB) was passed by the Lok Sabha Monday. While introducing the bill in Lok Sabha Union Home Minister Amit Shah once again reiterated that after the passage of the Bill only members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities, who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, will get Indian citizenship. Amit Shah also clearly indicated that India will never accept Rohingya Muslims.

The Shiv Sena had in the Lok Sabha supported the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 (CAB) with the condition that the changes they are demanding are incorporated into the Bill before it is introduced in Rajya Sabha.

Among other things, the Shiv Sena demanded the persecuted minorities should be given Citizenship without voting rights for 25 years.
