Malegaon: Thousands of people, including a large number of Hindus, on Monday protested in Malegaon against killing of Muslim and Dalit youths in mob lynching.
The protest called by Jamiat Ulema Malegaon received support from all social, religious and political organisations of the city.
Normal traffic was disrupted due to huge number of the protesters. This led to an unannounced holiday of afternoon shifts in schools.
The protest march against mob lynching was called after the brutal murder of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand and spate of attacks on Muslims and Dalits in various parts of the country.
The protest march started from the historic Qela, passed through Khyaban-e-Neshat Chowk, Ashrafia Chowk, Maulana Azad Road, Mushawerat Chowk and Mohammad Ali Road before culminating at Shahidon Ki Yadgaar.
The protesters were holding Indian Tricolour and placards written with solgans against the mob lynching. Some protesters equated mob lynching with terrorism and urged the government to act against the brazen act.
"The mob lynching has the support of the present dispensation", former MLA and President of Jamiat Ulema, Mufti Ismael, said while addressing the protest march.
"Modi's promise of Sabka Saath Sabka Vishwas is hollow and a mere slogan on a piece of paper", he said.
Umrain Mahfooz Rahmani, Secretary All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said mob lynching is 'political murder' of Muslims.
"This is nothing but political murder of Muslims which must be stopped sooner rather than later" he said.
In a show of solidarity, top community leaders of Hindus too joined the protesting Muslims against mob lynching. A number of Dalit leaders and youths participated in the march holding their blue colour flags.
Most of the powerloom units and textile mills in the city remained shut due to the protest march.Shops downed their shutters and routine trade activities in major parts of the city came to normalcy only late in the afternoon.
Local MLA Asif Shaikh raised the issue during the ongoing session of Maharashtra Assembly and demanded a law to curb mob lynching.
"As I stand here to speak there are hundreds of thousands of people who are protesting in Malegaon against mob lynching", he said.
Citing the thrashing of a Muslim taxi driver in Mumbra near Mumbai, Asif Shaikh said the crime has reached Maharashtra but the government is not ready to take any action.
"Protests were earlier held in Mumbai, Aurangabad and some other parts of the state. Now thousands of people are marching in Malegaon against mob lynching", he said demanidng a law to curb mob lynching.
