New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be holding an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss "one nation, one election" among other key issues.
Modi has invited the heads of all political parties having representatives in Parliament on Wednesday to freely interact and exchange views with the government. He will also interact with the members of both Houses of Parliament on June 20 over governance issues.
Modi's pitch for simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections has been strongly backed by Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), while some other opposition parties termed the suggestion as "impractical".
The Left parties while opposing the idea of ‘one nation, one election’, called the idea undemocratic and against the principle of federalism.
“This suggestion is merely an extension of the syndrome the BJP wants to impose of one nation-one culture-one nation-one language,” CPI leader D. Raja said.
"Instead of pushing for “one election” formula there is a need to bring in electoral reforms", he added.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too opposed the idea and even said she will not attend the all party meeting.
"The Centre should not go about "hurriedly" on a "sensitive and serious subject" like 'One Country, One Election'", she said.
