New Delhi: Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, one of the key accused in Malegaon terrorist attack case who won 2019 Lok Sabha election from Bhopal, Wednesday hailed Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatama Gandhi, in the Lok Sabha.

The Speaker however expunged her remarks from the proceedings of Lok Sabha after strong protest from the opposition leaders.

Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur created a stir in the lower house of Indian Parliament when she called Nathuram Godse a patriot, leading to strong protest by opposition leaders.

During a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, DMK leader A Raja cited a statement of Nathuram Godse on why he killed Mahatma Gandhi. Raja said Godse admitted he had nursed a grudge against Gandhi for 32 years, and killed him because he believed in a particular philosophy.

To this, Pragya Singh Thakur interrupted and told Raja not to give example of a 'deshbhakt'.

On Thakur's 'deshbhakt' remark, all opposition members stood up and protested. The BJP members then persuaded Thakur to sit down.

When questioned by mediapersons over her remark, the Singh said she would “answer tomorrow”.

This is not the first time when SIngh has praised Godse. She had referred to Godse as a patriot in May this year during campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections. Her statement had triggered a huge row with PM Modi saying he would never forgive her for insulting Mahatama Gandhi.

What action PM Modi took against his party MP is not known. But, the controversial MP, whose motorcycle was used in the 2008 Malegaon blast, was recently appointed to a Parliamentary panel led by Union Defence minister Rajnath Singh.
