Jakarta: Co-ordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto sustained injuries after being stabbed by a man at Menes Square area of Purwaraja Village, in Pandeglang District, Banten Province, on Thursday.

National Police Spokesman Brig.Gen.Dedi Prasetyo confirmed the attack on Wiranto.

Wiranto, who was protected by his assistant when attacked with a knife, had been hospitalized at Pandeglang District's Berkah Public Hospital. Many policemen were stationed at the hospital.

ANTARA News reported that a helicopter has been on stand by at the Pandeglang Square to evacuate Wiranto to Jakarta.

People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo reprehended the assault on the minister, hinting at the incident as being an early warning for the National Police.

In conversation with journalists in Jakarta, Soesatyo highlighted the need for police investigators to probe and unearth the motives of those behind the knife attack on Wiranto.

The MPR speaker believes that the attack on Wiranto, carried out 10 days before President-elect Joko Widodo and running mate, Ma'ruf Amin, are sworn-in respectively as Indonesia's President and Vice-President for the 2019-2024 term on October 20, is really an early warning for the police.
