Voting begins in Maharashtra amidst light showers

Mumbai: Voting started on a peaceful note in Maharashtra with celebs and commoners queuing up to exercise their franchise for the 288-Assembly constituencies in the state amidst rain in many areas including Mumbai and Nashik, here on Monday.

Among the early-bird voters were Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur, former Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar with his family, his cousin Supriya Sule, in Baramati, former Union Home Minister and former Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde in Solapur.

Long queues of voters are seen at polling booths despite downpour in Malegaon Center and Malegaon Outer assembly seats where incumbants Asif Shaikh Rasheed of Congress and Dada Bhuse of Shiv Sena are in tight race to retain their respective constituencies.

A total of 3,237 candidates from a host of parties besides Independents are in the fray in which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena combine is hoping to return to power for a second consecutive term against the opposition Congress-NCP alliance.

Voting also started for the lone Lok Sabha bye-election in Satara where the BJP has put up sitting MP Udayanraje Bhosale, who is challenged by NCP's Shrinivas Patil for the prestigious constituency that was once the royal seat of the Chhatrapatis.

The state has a total electorate of 8.97 crore, comprising 4.68 crore men and 4.28 crore women, plus 2,634 transgender voters.

The Election Commission has set up 966,661 polling stations and deployed a total number 135,021 VVPAT-EVMs for voting in the state.

The voting in Maharashtra will continue till 06:00 pm today. Counting of votes will take place on Thursday October 24 and result of all 288 seats of Maharashtra assembly will be declared on the same day.

The Election Commission of India will declare the voting percentage of 2019 Maharashtra elections after polling ends today evening.
