Tamil Nadu COVID-19 count at 24,586; death toll jumps to 197

Chennai: For the third consecutive day, over 1,000 persons tested positive for coronavirus in Tamil Nadu, taking the state's total tally to 24,586.

In a statement issued here, the state Health Department said 1,091 persons tested positive over the past 24 hours and 13 persons died, taking the death toll to 197.

The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 went up to 1,378.

The total number of active cases in Tamil Nadu stands at 10,680.

State capital Chennai with its high density of population continued to see the highest number of infections at 806, taking the total tally to 16,585. Chengalpattu district reported 82 coronavirus positive cases.

As on Tuesday, coronavirus cases in Chennai stood at 16,585, followed by Chengalpattu (1,308), Tiruvallur (1,025), Cuddalore (463) and Kancheepuram (433).

Earlier Greater Chennai Corporation officials said, the infection rate in the city will go up for some more time and then come down.

On Tuesday, 11,094 samples were tested taking the total to 5.14 lakh. Testing of 589 samples are under process.
