Mumbai: Mumbai Police have arrested an architect, reportedly mentally unstable, after he attacked three policemen on duty on Marine Drive early on Saturday morning, officials said.
The accused, identified as Karun Pradip Nayar, 27, was seen walking during lockdown on the road with a red rucksack and carrying a long chopper near the PMH Gymkhana at around 1.30 am.
A patrol team from the Marine Drive Police Station accosted him, but he started to run as the policemen gave chase.
When they attempted to catch and pin him down in a net, he turned back and attacked the police trio with the chopper, injuring them on the hand, arms and shoulders.
Two sub-inspectors, S. Shelke and J. Kadam, and a head constable were later rushed to the J.J. Hospital for treatment.
Nayar's mother informed the L.T. Marg Police Station that he was behaving abnormally since the past couple of months, and the chopper was reportedly bought for his architectural work.
A retired Air India clerk, she said that since the past one year, her son had become an addict and used to assault her at their Breach Candy residence.
Nayar has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act, including obstructing government officials on duty. Further investigations are on.
