New Delhi/Kolkata: A massive protest erupted after Jaspreet Singh, an on-duty IPS Officer accused some BJP workers, who were led by Suvendu Adhikari, of calling him ‘Khalistani’.
In a video shared by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, IPS Officer Jaspreet Singh is seen in a heated and power-packed argument with the BJP leaders.
“Just because I am wearing a Turban you are calling me Khalistani. You have got so much courage to call an IPS officer Khalistani?” Singh told the BJP leaders.
Today, the BJP's divisive politics has shamelessly overstepped constitutional boundaries. As per @BJP4India every person wearing a TURBAN is a KHALISTANI.

“I vehemently condemn this audacious attempt to undermine the reputation of our Sikh brothers & sisters, revered for their sacrifices and unwavering determination to our nation (sic)”, Banerjee wrote while tagging the video.
Sharing the video, the West Bengal Police also it was outraged over the BJP leaders attitude and said "the comment is as much malicious and racial as it is communally inciting."
"We, the West Bengal Police fraternity, are outraged to share this video, where one of our own officers was called ‘Khalistani’ by the state's Leader of the Opposition. His ‘fault’: he is both a proud Sikh, and a capable police officer who was trying to enforce the law", the Police said.
"This comment is as much malicious and racial as it is communally inciting. It is a criminal act. We unequivocally condemn the unprovoked, unacceptable attack on an individual’s religious identity and beliefs aimed to incite people to take to violence and break the law. Stern legal action is being initiated", the Police said.
Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) while condemning the BJP leader's comments reminded the BJP of the sacrifices Sikh Community made for the country.
"The intentional character assassination of a Sikh IPS officer S. Jaspreet Singh by the BJP leaders in West Bengal is highly condemnable. Leaders who have such thinking in the country should never forget that Sikhs have made the most sacrifices for the freedom and protection of the country. Sikhs do not need to get a certificate from anyone, rather they know how to perform services for the nation in accordance with their traditions and customs", he said.
"It is a big question that such people in the country deliberately create an atmosphere of hatred but the governments remain silent. Those who create such an atmosphere should be punished so that people who are honestly doing their duty in different areas do not have to be victims of such hate", he added.
The members of Sikh community are also protested outside the BJP headquarters in Kolkata and Delhi.
IPS Jaspreet Singh was deputed to prevent senior West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari from visiting Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. Sandeshkhali is tense since Feb 13 when clashes broke out between BJP workers and state police.
The BJP workers who clashed with the West Bengal Police had gathered in Sandeshkhali to protest against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh and others over alleged atrocities committed against women.
