Mumbai/Kolhapur: Former IPS officer, SM Mushrif, Wednesday said slain ATS Chief Hemant Karkare was killed by Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Govilkar and not by 26/11 Mumbai Terror attack convicts.
SM Mushrif was talking to reporters a day after Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra Assembly and senior Congress leader, Vijay Wadettiwar, claimed that senior IPS officer Hemant Karkare was killed by the firearm of an “RSS-linked” police officer and not by bullets fired by Ajmal Kasab during the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.
Hemant Karkare is credited to have exposed the Hindutva terrorist network involved in multiple terrorist attacks in India, including 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts.
The investigation into the Malegaon bomb blasts - which led to the exposure of saffron terror and the arrests of RSS linked Hindutva terrorists, had invited for then ATS Chief Hemant Karkare the ire of one of India’s largest organisation which is also the Bhartiya Janata Party’s mentor. Hemant Karkare was later killed during the Mumbai terror attack on November 26, 2008.
The RSS was so upset by the arrests of Hindutva terrorists that Narendra Modi, who was CM Gujarat at the time, along with other BJP leaders, were baying for Karkare's blood post the Malegaon investigations into the allegations of terrorist activities by the saffron brigade.
Following Hemant Karkare's assassination, Modi as Gujarat CM, had announced 1 crore reward for the martyred officer's family. Karkare's wife, Kavita Karkare, however, refused to accept the 1 crore announced by then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, according to India Today.
The assassination of Karkare hit the media headlines four days ago once again after Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar while campaigning in Mumbai said the former Maharashtra ATS Chief was killed by an ‘RSS linked’ police officer.
Wadettiwar also said Ujjwal Nikam, BJP candidate in Mumbai North Central constituency, was a traitor.
“Hemant Karkare was not killed by bullets of terrorists like Ajmal Kasab, but by a policeman close to RSS. Ujjwal Nikam, who appeared as Special Public Prosecutor, is a traitor who suppressed this fact and the BJP has given an election ticket to a traitor like him”, he said while talking to reporters Saturday May 04, 2024.
A day later, Wadettiwar said whatever he said was based on SM Mushrif’s book “Who killed Hemant Karkare?”
SM Mushrif, who retired as Inspector General (IG) of Police after over three decades of diligent policing, made an elaborate case out of nearly a dozen blasts, including the 2006 and 2008 Malegaon blasts, conducted by Hindutva terror groups of different stripes.
Mushrif had not revealed the name of the police officer who had actually killed Hemant Karkare in his book. However, when reporters approached him after Congress leader Wadettiwar's statement, he revealed that Karkare was killed by then Assistant Police Inspector Sanjay Govilkar.
"I came to this conclusion after 4 to 5 years of thorough investigation. I had also informed about this in writing to the state government and the high court", he said.
He said Ujjwal Nikam also knew how Karkare was killed. "He however hid this fact from the court", he said.
Interestingly, Sanjay Govilkar was suspended in 2019 for letting off Sohail Bhamla who had linked with underworld. He was however cleared of the charge.
Sanjay Govilkar has so far not responded to SM Mushrif's latest claim.
