New Delhi: Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi Saturday August 29, 2026 demanded action against BJP/RSS people involved in ‘suddhikaran’ or ‘purification’ of the stage in Haldwani, Uttarakhand visited by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Addressing the media at the Congress headquarters Indira Bhavan in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said suddhikaran or purification is another name of ‘untouchability’ which is a crime.
Congress President Kharge, who is a Dalit, had visited Ramlila Ground in Haldwani, Uttarakhand on August 08, 2026 and addressed a public meeting. Some people reportedly associated with the BJP and RSS after the meeting cleaned the stage, calling it “suddhikaran” or “purification” ritual.
Kharge shared the incident in the Rajya Sabha to which Union Minister JP Nadda assured that those involved will be booked and legal action taken against them. But, no action has taken as of now, Rahul said.
"20 Days have Passed"
“20 days have passed since this shameful incident, but no action has been taken in this matter yet”, Rahul Gandhi said while addressing the specially convened press conference today.
“This attitude of the BJP government reveals their anti-Dalit mentality, but Narendra Modi should remember that we will not tolerate this. We will seek justice”, Rahul said.
Rahul also said that the matter is concerning not the Congress President alone, but it is an issue connected to every Dalit individual in India.
“If such treatment can be meted out openly, without hesitation, to our national president, then imagine... what must be happening to a child in school?” he asked.
“This is not acceptable to us. Our fight is against the ideology of BJP-RSS, which promotes discrimination and inequality”, he said.
Rahul reiterated that purification under the SC/ST Act is a crime, but 20 days have passed and no action has been taken yet.
"Our demand is—FIRs should be registered against those who carried out purification in Uttarakhand", he said.
