New Delhi: With divisions persisting on inclusion of caste in census, a meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the ticklish issue is expected to finalise its report on August six.
All political parties have been asked by the GoM's Chairman Pranab Mukherjee to give their views on the matter by that day and it is still unclear as to how many parties have responded so far.
Sources said that the government has asked two questions to the political parties, including whether they are in favour of inclusion of caste in census. Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, however, said that his party has not yet been asked to give its views.
He said the party favoured enumeration of OBCs but not voluntarily through the census process. It wanted scientific mechanism to be evolved for carrying out this task.
An earlier meeting of the GoM had seen sharp divisions with some members favouring inclusion of caste while others opposing, contending that it could harm the social fabric of the country.
Government had set up the GoM on the controversial issue after consensus eluded at two meetings of the Union Cabinet.
Parties like SP, RJD and JD(U) are strongly in favour of including caste in census and disrupted proceedings of Parliament in the last Budget Session by pressing for their demand. There are divisions even within Congress as also BJP over the issue.
A caste census was last conducted in the country in 1931.
