New Delhi: Eminent leaders and social activists today took out a march in the national capital demanding that caste should not be included in census.
Former Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar, noted criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani and former union minister Arif M Khan took part in the march.
"We should not divide our motherland in the name of castes. We should live in unity.
Caste-based census will go against the purpose. The politicians in power should recognise this while going forward with the idea," Jakhar, a former Lok Sabha Speaker, said.
"The caste-based census will ultimately divide people and split the country into many parts. I appeal to everyone to make this movement a success and make the government feel the need for not including caste in census," Jethmalani, a Rajya Sabha MP, said.
They later submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Speaker. The Centre last week started eliciting views of various political parties on caste-based census.
Many parties like SP, RJD and JD(U) are strongly in favour of including caste in census. The Government had last month set up a GoM on the controversial issue after consensus eluded at two meetings of the Union Cabinet on the issue.
