Two Muslim groups clash, one injured

Friday December 17, 2010 08:49:58 PM, IANS

Lucknow: Tension gripped Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh Friday after a clash between two Muslim sects left one man critically injured, police said.

The trouble erupted in Bajaria area after some members of the Barelvi sect burnt an effigy of a religious leader of the Deobandi sect, police said.

It was followed by heated arguments between members of the two sects who resorted to stoning and firing.

"One man suffered bullet injuries. His condition is stated to be critical," Deputy Inspector General of Police Mutha Ashok Jain told IANS on telephone from Kanpur, some 80 km from here.

Kanpur District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram told IANS: "The situation is now well under control. As of now no one has been arrested."
