Mysore:
Speaking at the valedictory function of the three-day conference on 'The life and achievements of Tipu
Sultan' Prof Nigel, Chancellor of
Cambridge
University, called upon historians to make the masses aware about
the facts pertaining to Tipu Sultan, who had become a legendary
figure.
Several misconceptions prevailed about this brave patriot,
he said.
"Historians must be cautious that they do not mislead the
readers of
history
by citing falsities or by over-glorifying the legendary
personalities," he said.
The
conference was organised in Mysore by the Department of Archaeology, which concluded
here today will submit its recommendations to both the Centre and
the Karnataka government.
Prof Nigel
further said historians must
also ascertain the facts first before recording events about popular
personalities.
Dr B Sheikh Ali, former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore
and
Goa
Universities, asserted that the misconceptions in the minds of
people about Tipu Sultan must be removed and facts recorded in the
annals of history.
Earlier, Tanvir
Sait, MLA in the Karnataka Assembly during the conference mooted the idea of starting
educational institutions named after Tipu Sultan on the lines of Kittur Rani Chennamma and Morarji
schools.
“They
need not be institutions of higher education like medical college or
engineering college, but can be even polytechnics that can help
educate and make youngsters enterprising or employable", Sait
said while addressing the conference.
Regretting criticism directed at Tipu Sultan by a few members of
the Government, he said, "It was the duty of the Department of Archaeology and
Museums or the Department of Culture to counter the criticism
effectively. But this did not happen, as a result of which
misconceptions about Tipu Sultan continue to persist and get
reinforced."
“People
should realise that Tipu Sultan was not any alien but born and
brought up in the region and was a Kannadiga,” Sait said during the
conference.
